Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) – Harry Potter cast his most powerful spell yet as the final film in the blockbuster franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” conjured up the best opening weekend total of all-time at the U.S. box office, bringing in $168.6 million in just three days.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ earned $92.1 million on Friday alone, which includes a record $43.5 million in midnight shows. The film also takes the largest opening day record for that as well.

The film also broke the previous record for best domestic opening weekend, previously held by “The Dark Knight,” which earned $158.4 million. It’s also earned the biggest worldwide debut for a film ever: $307 million already grossed in its first days in release, for a current worldwide total of $476 million.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ was the first of the films to be released in 3D, and 43 percent of the weekend gross came from 3D showings. It also earned a record opening in IMAX theaters, with $15.5 million coming in from 274 theaters.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” became the year’s first film to cross the $300 million mark at the box office. It earned another $21.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $302.8 million.

The weekend’s sole other opener, Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh,” earned $8 million during its debut weekend, coming in at #6. Although it was in line with expectations, that’s behind the fourth weekend for Disney/Pixar’s “Cars 2,” which grossed $8.3 million over the weekend.

Cars 2 wants to be Cars too.

It’s not — and, given the masterful original that the sequel follows, it would border on the miraculous if it were — but there’s still plenty to admire and enjoy in Cars 2.

The 2006 comedy-adventure, Cars, may have looked like little more than a bunch of animated cars racing around a track. But it turned out to be so much more.

The ultimate high-octane CAR-toon, it featured cleverly anthropomorphic automobile characters and awe-inspiring landscapes. But it also surprised us and drove off with our affection by getting it in gear with a thoughtful and emotionally resonant narrative about not just a car race, but the human race and the rat race as well, sporting a level of honest sentiment and poignancy that proved improbably affecting.

Wow: eye-popping visuals, laughs galore, and a nostalgia bath combined for one of the best movie experiences of its year.

The sequel adds international espionage to the formula as well, kicking off in the manner and style of a James Bond flick as it globetrots to London, Paris, Tokyo, and the Italian Riviera — all rendered with startling photo-realism.

Owen Wilson again provides the voice of star car Lightning McQueen, the racing legend from Radiator Springs who heads overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. This will give Sir Miles Axlerod (Eddie Izzard) the chance to demonstrate that his revolutionary new clean fuel, Allinol, is a viable alternative to gasoline — a theme addressed unobtrusively in this never-slow-down enterprise.

Meanwhile, clueless tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), who has accompanied McQueen to assist him, is mistaken for an American spy and is thus tugged in two directions because he’s been invited to join a top-secret spy mission masterminded by vintage British sports car and superspy Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and high-tech coupe and spy-in-training Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer).

Director John Lasseter (Cars, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life) and debuting co-director Brad Lewis keep things moving at a lightning-quick pace, their level of inventiveness admirably and absolutely unflagging. But the sequel seems to depend much more on the audience’s interest in cars and racing, at times seeming like Nascars 2.

Ben Queen’s screenplay has a lot of plot — far too much, when you come right down to it — as well as too much time spent in the company of the charmless Mater character, as Larry the Cable Guy’s aw-shucks line readings as the socially embarrassing Mater are embarrassing for us as well and vividly demonstrate the law of diminishing returns. We’d be a lot happier spending more time with Francesco Bernoulli, the Italian champion wittily voiced by John Turturro.

But a bigger problem is that the emotional quotient never quite kicks in the way it did in the original — which is a big part of the reason why the climax falls rather flat. The energy level never dips, to be sure — full throttle is the only speed the movie knows — but velocity is no substitute for emotional involvement.

All that said, this still represents a staggering technical achievement, beautifully designed and energetically sustained, but the trifecta that Cars managed — superior story values, immensely appealing characters, and fluid thematic depth — remains elusive.

A slightly exasperating but still exhilarating animated adventure, the souped-up Cars 2 isn’t Cars’ equal, but it still crosses the finish line as a respectable sequel.

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) – Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the rest of the “Cars” gang are going international for this summer’s highly anticipated sequel, and so is the film’s soundtrack. Among the stars gearing up to provide music for the film are Brad Paisley, Robbie Williams, and Weezer.

Paisley, who just released his new album “This Is Country Music,” contributes two songs to the soundtrack, “Nobody’s Fool” and “Collision of Worlds,” a rock duet with British star Robbie Williams. Paisley also had two songs featured on the first “Cars” set, “Find Yourself” and “Behind the Clouds.”

“The song is a rock vocal event with one of the most talented people I’ve ever met, Robbie Williams,” Paisley said about his new duet for “Cars 2.” “It was John’s idea to bring these two worlds together – combining the English and American takes on music. We’re both out of our comfort zone, seeing what happens when you’re forced into going new places, which is really what ‘Cars 2′ is about. It’s totally parallel to the story.”

Weezer appropriately covers a track from the Ric Ocasek-led The Cars for the soundtrack. Rivers Cuomo and the rest of the band perform the band’s 1984 #1 rock hit “You Might Think.”

Japanese pop girl band Perfume contribute their hit “Polyrhythm” to the set, while French singer Benabar performs “Mon coeur fait vroum (My Heart Goes Vroom),” a song written by the film’s composer Michael Giacchino.

Giacchino, who also scored three other Pixar hits “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” and “Up,” creates his fourth score for the animation studio with “Cars 2,” with over 20 tracks of score filling the film’s soundtrack.

The “Cars 2″ soundtrack hits stores on June 14th. The film hits theaters everywhere on June 24th.

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) – Fans waiting for their next visceral assault by way of Michael Bay’s Autobot-filled “Transformers” series will get its first 3D sequel even sooner. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” has had its release date moved up by a couple days.

Originally slated to open on July 1, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” will now hit theaters on Wednesday, June 29. According to the Hollywood Reporter, insiders said that giving the film a five-day opening weekend was always the plan.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is the sole film opening on June 29. It is, however, now opening closer to what’s sure to be another box-office juggernaut with the boys: “Cars 2,” which opens a few days earlier on June 24.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is the second sequel in the “Transformers” franchise, following 2009′s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” which grossed over $835 million worldwide, and the first to be released in 3D.

A new trailer for the film, which stars Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, and newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is set to be released Friday.

New York, NY, United States (AHN Entertainment) – Diddy’s police escort has prompted an investigation by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg after learning that the police department provided an escort to the rap superstar without proper authorization.

The NYPD admitted that it provided Diddy escort following a concert last week. According to Page Six, Diddy was supposed to fly in a helicopter to New Jersey to make good on a $75,000 club appearance. But the air flight wasn’t cleared by the FAA so he demanded a police escort to get him through the traffic.

He was escorted by three NYPD squad cars, and was joined by New Jersey cops at the venue Friday.

Although Diddy made it in time for his club appearance, the NY mayor wasn’t too happy about the rapper’s special treatment.

He told the New York Post, “The bottom line is the police department should treat everybody exactly the same. If you don’t get a police escort, P. Diddy shouldn’t.”

Bloomberg said he spoke with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly Tuesday morning upon learning of the incident.

Their partnership will also support the global unveiling of the 21st Century Beetle in Shanghai, New York, and Berlin, and will be tied to exclusive parties and concerts in the international cities.

The MTV World Stage will be unveiled with a concert by the Grammy Award-winning supergroup The Black Eyed Peas at the legendary Terminal 5 in New York. They will perform hits from their latest album “The Beginning,” including some tracks from their previous albums.

The concert, the highlight of the event, will be streamed live on the World Stage Hub at www.worldstage.mtv.com. It will also be broadcast on MTV channels globally starting April 22nd.

Meanwhile, in MTV World Stage Party Berlin, taking place at E-Werk, will be headlined by 2manydjs, a Belgian duo who will perform a DJ set.

Special editions of “Pimp My Ride,” “Made,” and “Road to World Stage” will air on MTV platforms internationally as well as part of the Viacom International Media Networks and Volkswagen partnership.
