Rome, Italy (AHN) – Anti-Mafia police in Italy on Tuesday seized $1.92 billion worth of assets from a Sicilian businessman who has ties with a Cosa Nostra boss.
The assets of 40 companies of wind farm businessman Vito Nicastri, 54, were the largest ever sequestered from the organized crime syndicate, according to Interior Minister Roberto Maroni.
The seized assets include shares in foreign companies, real estate, luxury villas, warehouses, luxury cars, a 14-meter catamaran, and 60 bank accounts, insurance policies and bonds.
Aside from raising funds for Matteo Messina Denaro, Nicastri also worked with ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s richest mafia, across the Messina Straits in Calabria.
Denaro became the supreme Mafia boss when Bernardo Provenzano, 77, was arrested in 2006. However, police have yet to arrest the young Mafia kingpin.
