Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Reports of a rising number of Mini Cooper engine fires have caused federal investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to begin an investigation. BMW manufactures the car. NHTSA says its Office of Defect Investigations is trying to determine if a recall is needed. No injuries were reported in the dozen complaints of engine fires in the Mini Cooper sport coupes. Toyota City, Japan (AHN) – Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC) has announced plans to export cars manufactured by its subsidiary in India to South Africa. The company plans to begin exporting its “Etios” series sedan and hatchback. The vehicles are manufactured by production and sales subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM). Both models run on gasoline. Toyota has manufactured vehicles in India for sale there since 1999. However, this will be the first time it exports to overseas markets vehicles manufactured in India by TKM. Fullerton police officer accused of murder released on bail

CA, United States (AHN) – A Fullerton police officer charged in the fatal beating of an unarmed, mentally ill man has been freed after posting bond. According to jail records, Manuel Ramos, 37, was released from a facility in Santa Ana shortly after midnight on Thursday. The veteran officer posted bond in lieu of the $1 million bail ordered by the judge in his case. Local reports cited Ramos’ attorney as saying family and friends helped the officer raise money for the bond. Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – The United States has stepped up security just two days before the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks after the security officials claimed to have received a ‘credible bomb threat’. Department of Homeland Security said, “There is specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information.” The department added that it has taken all necessary steps to mitigate any threats that arise, adding that extra police and heavily armed officers have been deployed. Quetta, Pakistan (AHN) – A suspected suicide bomb blast has claimed 10 lives and injured 17 others in the southwestern city of Quetta as the major Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr begins. According to Pakistani police, the blast happened while hundreds of people were going home following morning prayers on Wednesday. It is believed that the bomber wanted to target the Shi’ite mosque, but failed to reach it because of the road was blocked. Two women and a child were among the victims. In addition, several cars and a building also got damaged in the explosion. Although Quetta is home to both nationalists and Taliban extremists, no terror outfit has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

US trade deficit widens as exports plunge

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – The United States saw its exports for the month of June fall more rapidly than imports declined. U.S. exports fell by $4.1 billion to $170.9 billion, while imports fell by $1.9 billion to $223.9 billion and still exceeded exports. That fueled another increase in the U.S. trade gap with the rest of the world, widening the gap to a $53.1 billion trade deficit, the U.S. Commerce said. That was a bigger trade gap than analysts had expected and the largest since October 2008. Concrete slab falls in Montreal tunnel

Montreal, Quebec, Canada (AHN) – A large concrete slab fell on Sunday morning at a major Montreal expressway. However, no one was injured by the incident, which happened at the Ville-Marie tunnel. The tunnel is used by about 100,000 cars on an average weekend, according to Transport Quebec. The accident indicates the weak state of public infrastructure in the Canadian province. The 15-meter (49-foot) slab fell across three lanes, which led to the closure of the tunnel and caused gridlock. The concrete was a part of the roofing of the tunnel, shaped into a grill-like structure with holes to permit air and light to enter into the tunnel.
