Concord, NC, United States (AHN Sports) – In his first NASCAR Nationwide Series start of the season Matt Kenseth outlasted Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards to win Saturday’s Top Gear 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Filling in for Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, Kenseth scored the 26th Nationwide win of his career and was followed across the line by Edwards, Kyle Busch, pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Reed Sorenson.
“I’m happy Trevor is gonna be back next week. It was fun to fill in. It was a great day for Fastenal having all three cars here and it was an honor to drive this Mustang,” Kenseth. “This is the first Nationwide COT race I’ve run. I haven’t run in over a year, so it was nice to get in this car and come out here and have some fun on Saturday.”
Brad Keselowski, Steve Wallace, Brian Scott, Aric Almirola and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top 10.
Former Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen finished 27th in his Nationwide debut.
Kenseth made the pass for the lead on Lap 198 and drove away to win by .763 seconds.
“That was a lot of fun. I hope the fans enjoyed that. That was hard racing. Matt there at the end, he was better and he had the kid gloves on with me there,” Edwards said. “He was taking it easy on me and when it was time to go he dispatched me pretty quick.”
Elliott Sadler retained the series points lead by one over Stenhouse, who won last week at Iowa, and by two over Reed Sorenson.
