Toronto, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – GO Transit announced Monday the expansion of its train fleet with the purchase of 50 new bi-level passenger rail coaches worth $125 billion.
The coaches would be built by train and aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.
The addition of 50 new coaches would increase the transit firm’s capacity by 8,000 commuters daily.
Bombardier is scheduled to start the manufacture of the 50 coaches in June at its Thunder Bay plant in Ontario and deliver them to GO Transit late this year.
The new coaches would raise the total number of the company’s bi-level cars to 565.
Bombardier had been GO Transit’s provider of bi-level coaches since 1978.
On top of the GO Transit orders, Bombardier is also building new subway and light rail coaches for the Toronto Transit Commission and Metrolinx.
