Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – General Motors is voluntarily recalling its top-selling Cadillac SRX because of a problem with the right side airbag.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday that the vehicle’s roof-rail airbag on the right side is programmed to switch off during certain crash situations if the right front passenger seat is not occupied. This increases the risk to injury of passengers in the the right rear side during collisions.
GM said the airbags will deploy during a rollover, and that the SRX meets federal side protection standards. However, because the owner manual states that the roof-rail airbags are not affected by the passengers sensing system, the vehicle does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208.
About 47,401 units of the 2011 model are affected. The cars were manufactured between February 2010 and April this year.
Owners should bring their cars to a General Motors dealer for reprogramming of the sensing system. The recall begins on June 17.
The SRX is a crossover vehicle that retails starting at $33,830. It sells in front-wheel and all-wheel drive models, with either a 3-liter V6, 265 horsepower engine, or a 2.8-liter Turbo V6, 300 horsepower.
